Who Is Bindlestick Bill?

Call him "Bindlestick" for short. He's a traveling troubadour who walks into towns along the Hudson River and sets up camp. His signature black bowler slightly tilted to one side and a bindlestick resting on his right shoulder, Bill gathers young and old together for songs and laughter. His original songs, containing educational concepts, are reminiscent of time gone by blending folk, ragtime and a touch of the blues.

You never know what Bill will do between songs. He's been known to tell jokes, recount stories of his amazing adventures and even juggle! And, if you listen very carefully, you might overhear Bindlestick talking with his favorite traveling companion, "Professor Sock-ra-tease." Sockratease loves to share his extensive knowledge about the world with young minds. It's hard to believe that a sock monkey could be so smart!

Bindlestick plans to continue traveling up and down the banks of the Hudson River teaching his songs and engaging children's hearts, minds and imaginations. His next appearance at the Howland Cultural Arts Center, Saturday, April 8th at 2 pm, will be a wonderful sing-a-long with his new show, Songs Along the Hudson. Children will time travel with Bindlestick on a musical journey covering 10,000 years of Hudson River history. Bill and the kids will explore how the Hudson River was formed, learn about the pioneer plants and animals that first appeared after the Ice Age, discover a mystery mammal, find out about local Native Americans who fished in the river, become pirates and ram a sloop, hitch a ride on a west bank freight train and so much more. Like all of Bindlestick's shows, it's a great chance to listen, laugh and learn.

In order to get his songs out to a wider audience, Bindlestick is currently working on recording a 12 song CD that will feature a handful of very talented musical friends. In the mean time, he plans to continue traveling up and down the banks of the Hudson River teaching his songs. He will keep his feet dancing, his hand strumming, and his smiling eyes looking down the road for the next show. Please come to the next show, you will be amazed at how Bindlestick's curious nature and wandering spirit connects with the child within all of us!
